A cool roof coating is a white, heat reflective roof paint that turns sunlight back before the slab absorbs it, so the top floor stays cooler. Armstrong SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 and SUMMERPROOF COOL 644 reflect 87% of solar heat and waterproof the terrace in the same coats, applied in two to three coats over the roof and the parapet. Cracks and loose material are dealt with first. A leaking roof takes a reinforced build-up with the cool roof coats on top.

A top floor that stays hot long after sunset, a ceiling that is warm to the touch and an air conditioner that never switches off all point to the roof. A terrace in the sun absorbs heat all day and passes it down through the slab into the rooms below. A cool roof coating, also called heat reflective roof paint or roof cooling paint, turns most of that sunlight back before it becomes heat. Five checks decide which coating and how many coats. They need no instruments.
Compare the top floor with the floor below on a hot afternoon. If only the top floor is hot and the ceiling feels warm, the roof is the source. If every floor is hot, sun on the walls and windows matters as well.
Note the surface: bare screed, an old waterproof coating, old bitumen or tarfelt, tiles or china mosaic, or metal and AC sheets. Each takes a cool roof coating in a different way.
Look for damp patches on the ceiling after rain and for cracks on the terrace. A cool roof coating also waterproofs, but cracks, hollow patches and failed edges are repaired first.
Pour water or look after rain. Water that stands for days leaves dirt and algae, and a dirty white roof reflects less. Low spots are corrected before coating.
SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 is recommended for light foot traffic only. A roof that carries crowds, furniture or machinery needs a different top layer, and the terrace waterproofing page covers those build-ups.
Match what you found to one route. Armstrong makes several heat reflective roof coatings and every one of them also waterproofs. They differ in reflectivity, chemistry and finish, so the choice depends on the roof and on what you want from it.
Repair first, then cool. A cool roof coating reflects heat only while it stays bonded, clean and whole. Loose, old and flaking material is removed, cracks are sealed and the roof is made to drain before the first coat goes on.

Before any product goes on, remove all loose, old and flaking material. This is a starting point, and an Armstrong expert confirms the final choice after seeing the site.
Every product below suits this job. Pick the one that fits the site, or ask an Armstrong expert to choose with you.
This is Route A: a sound RCC terrace that is hot but does not leak. The work is cleaning, sealing the few cracks there are, and two to three coats. SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 and SUMMERPROOF COOL 644 are the coatings made for the highest reflectivity. RAINSEAL 200, RAINSEAL FRC 623 and RAINSEAL CFR 613 are heat reflective waterproof coatings that suit the same roof. Pick the one that fits the roof, or ask an Armstrong expert.
This is Route B. Many hot top floors also have a roof that cracks or leaks. One build-up handles both: the leak repair comes first, a reinforced membrane goes down with fibre mesh as layer 2, and the cool roof coats form the top layers. This page covers the heat side. The full leak diagnosis, the five checks and the repair sequence are on the terrace waterproofing page, and the two pages are meant to be used together.
These are figures from Armstrong's own laboratory testing under controlled conditions. The result on a real roof depends on the slab, the sun on the walls and windows, ventilation and how clean the coating is kept.
Routes C and D. A roof that is already waterproof does not need to be stripped to be made cool. A reflective coat goes over the sound layer that is there. What matters is that the old layer is firmly bonded, and that anything loose comes off first.
Route E. Offices, hospitals, schools, factories and warehouses have large roofs, long cooling hours and often an engineer who writes the specification. On these roofs the coating is chosen by its tested figures, and on new buildings it is planned as the last stage of the roof and not added later.
There is no single best cool roof paint. Each coating below reflects heat and waterproofs in the same coat, and each is right for a different roof. The table gives the stated figures so you can compare them directly.
Two properties decide how cool a roof stays. Solar reflectance is the share of sunlight the surface turns back. Thermal emittance is how readily the surface gives up the heat it does absorb. The Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) combines the two into one number: a standard black surface scores 0 and a standard white surface 100, and a high-performance coating can score above 100.
Approximate quantities from each product’s stated coverage, for 1,000 sq.ft (93 sq.m) of plain surface. Rough surfaces use more, and the parapet faces are extra. An Armstrong expert confirms the final quantity after seeing the site.
Enter the roof size and the parapet to see the litres needed. Quantities only. Figures are for a plain surface; rough surfaces use more.
This is an estimate of material only, worked out from each product's stated coverage on a smooth, prepared surface. Rough or porous surfaces use more, so allow about 10% extra. Crack sealing, patch repair, plaster, coving and tiling materials are not included. An Armstrong expert confirms the final quantity after seeing the site.
A cool roof coating is a white, solar reflective coating applied on a roof so that most of the sunlight is reflected and little is absorbed as heat. Armstrong cool roof coatings such as SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 and SUMMERPROOF COOL 644 also form an elastomeric waterproof membrane, so the roof is cooled and waterproofed in the same coats.
Armstrong cool roof coatings are acrylic and polyurethane based. SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 is a blend of pure acrylic and polyurethane with infrared reflective pigments, micro-glass fibres and ceramic fillers. SUMMERPROOF COOL 644 is 100% pure acrylic with ceramic powder. RAINSEAL 200 is an acrylic elastomeric coating. RAINSEAL FRC 623 and RAINSEAL CFR 613 are fibre reinforced polyurethane elastomeric coatings. All three have stated heat figures.
Reflect the sun before it heats the slab. Clean and repair the terrace, then apply two to three coats of a cool roof coating over the roof and the parapet walls. Armstrong states an indoor temperature 8 to 10°C lower with two to three coats of SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 in its own laboratory testing.
Armstrong's stated laboratory figures are 8 to 10°C with two to three coats of SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 and up to 12 to 15°C in a five-layer composite system, 8 to 10°C for RAINSEAL CFR 613 and 6 to 8°C for RAINSEAL 200 with two coats. Results on site vary with the roof, the walls and the weather.
Yes, on a roof that has been repaired first. Every Armstrong cool roof coating is also an elastomeric waterproof coating. SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 bridges cracks up to 3 mm and shows no leak at 7 bar. Cracks, hollow patches and failed edges are still repaired before coating, as set out on the terrace waterproofing page.
On most terraces you do not have to choose. A hot, sound roof takes two to three coats of a cool roof coating. A cracked or leaking roof takes a reinforced build-up with fibre mesh as layer 2, and the cool roof coating forms the top layers.
Two to three. Armstrong recommends two to three coats of SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 and SUMMERPROOF COOL 644, and states that three coats are enough to meet the SRI standard. Over an existing Armstrong waterproof coating, two coats are generally recommended.
Yes, if the old layer is sound and bonded. SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 can go over RAINSEAL 200, RAINSEAL RWC 902, RAINSEAL BMW 250, RAINPROOF PU 400, ROOFCOAT FLEXI 100 and ROOFBOND RFX PLUS 210. RAINSEAL CFR 613 is made as a recoat layer. Loose, blistered or flaking material is removed first.
Yes. SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 is recommended for ACC, iron and GI sheets and SUMMERPROOF COOL 644 for metal roofs and ACC and GI sheets. Leaking laps, fasteners and rust are treated first. See the metal and sheet roof page.
SRI is the Solar Reflectance Index. It combines how much sunlight a surface reflects with how readily it gives up absorbed heat. A standard black surface is 0 and a standard white surface is 100. SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 is stated at SRI 113, SUMMERPROOF COOL 644 at 110 and RAINSEAL CFR 613 at 106.
Light foot traffic, yes, after the coating has cured. SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 is recommended only for light foot traffic and not for the movement of machinery or equipment. Roofs with heavy use need a trafficable build-up.
A cooler slab means the air conditioner runs less. Armstrong states up to 30% lower energy use in air-conditioned premises with SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 and up to 25% with SUMMERPROOF COOL 644. The saving depends on the building and how it is cooled.
It depends on the building and where it is. Some authorities require cool roofs for government and commercial buildings and for larger homes, and the Energy Conservation Building Code defines a cool roof by its reflectance and emittance. Check with your local authority, and ask Armstrong for the test figures of the coating you choose.
SUMMERSHIELD COOL 666 is touch dry in about 2 hours at 25°C, can be recoated in 3 to 4 hours at 30°C and cures fully in 4 to 5 days. SUMMERPROOF COOL 644 cures fully in 2 to 3 days at 30°C. RAINSEAL 200 needs 3 days before foot traffic.
