Tile Adhesive and Epoxy Grout: The Right TILEX for Tile Fixing and Grouting

Tile fixing lasts when the tile adhesive matches the surface and the tile, and the grout matches the joint and the room. For ceramic and vitrified tiles on cured concrete, TILEX 350 or TILEX 351 PLUS is used. Large tiles and stone take TILEX 353. Tile on tile, boards and MIVAN walls take TILEX 521 or TILEX 512. Joints are filled with TILEX TG U 1600 or TG S 1500 cement grout, or TILEX EPOXY STAIN FREE 100 in wet and stain-prone areas.

Step 1

Tile fixing: check the surface, the tile and the location first

Tiles that sound hollow, tiles coming loose from the floor, wall tiles falling, and tile joints turning black or cracking are the complaints behind most searches for a tile adhesive or an epoxy grout. Nearly all of them trace back to a choice made before the first tile was laid: an adhesive that did not suit the surface or the tile, or a grout that did not suit the room. Tile fixing and grouting done right starts with four checks.

Match the adhesive to the surface and the tile. Match the grout to the joint and the exposure. These are two separate decisions. No TILEX adhesive or grout is better or worse than another. Each is made for a job, and the right one is the one that fits yours.
1

What is the surface?

Cured concrete, screed, plaster or masonry is the usual case. Existing tiles are smooth and do not absorb. Gypsum board, cement board, plywood and MIVAN walls flex or are very dense. Each needs a different adhesive.

2

What is the tile?

Ceramic and standard vitrified tiles, large-format slabs, natural stone, marble and glass mosaic behave differently. Big tiles and stone need more grip and more give from the bed.

3

Where is it?

A dry room, a bathroom or kitchen, an outside floor, a facade in full sun, or a pool. Water, heat and movement all raise the demand on the bed and the joint.

4

Is the surface sound, level and cured?

Tap for hollow plaster, check the level, and ask how old the concrete is. A slab should be cured and 28 days old before tiling with a water-mixed adhesive.

Step 2

Find the right tile adhesive and grout for your job

Match your job to one route. Each takes you to the section that covers it.

Route A

Floor or wall tiles on concrete, screed or plaster

A polymer modified cement adhesive, combed as a full bed, chosen by tile size and location.
Route B

New tiles over old tiles

Tile on tile, without breaking the old floor, using an adhesive made to bond to a smooth tile face.
Route C

Tiles on boards, plywood or MIVAN walls

A flexible two-component adhesive that moves with the board.
Route D

Marble, granite and large slabs

A deformable or epoxy adhesive, in white or non-staining grades for light stone.
Route E

Ready to fix: how to lay the tiles

Surface preparation, mixing, trowel, open time, movement joints and when to grout.
Route F

Choosing or redoing the grout

Epoxy or cement, sanded or unsanded, with or without latex, and how to clean the tiles.
Route G

Tiles hollow, loose or cracked

Find the cause first. Loose tiles are refixed, and the floor is relaid only when the bed has failed.
Not sure

Let the finder suggest an adhesive

Answer three questions and see a starting recommendation.

A tile is only as good as the bed under it. Full contact, the right adhesive, movement joints and a grout made for the room: those four decide how long the floor lasts.
