Swimming pool waterproofing is done on the positive side, the face the water touches, before any tile is fixed. The Armstrong system has four layers: an integral compound in the concrete shell, a lining of ROOFCOAT FLEXI 100 or ROOFBOND RFX PLUS 210 in two coats, a TILEX adhesive bed, and TILEX EPOXY STAIN FREE 100 in the joints. Expansion joints take ROOFEX-SEAL PS. A leaking pool is diagnosed first and repaired locally where possible. Start with the checks below.

A water level that keeps dropping, tiles coming off the wall, grout washing out of the joints, damp soil or a wet plant room next to the pool: these are the usual signs of swimming pool leakage. A pool is a water tank with a tile finish and treated water. It holds water against its floor and walls all day, so it is waterproofed the way any water-retaining structure is, and then tiled with materials that survive pool chemicals. This page covers concrete swimming pools, plunge pools, water bodies and fountains. Five checks decide the swimming pool waterproofing treatment.
A new shell can be waterproofed in the right order from the start. A tiled pool is first checked to see whether the leak is at a fitting, a joint or through the shell.
Mark the water level and compare it with a bucket of pool water kept on a step for a day or two. If the pool drops more than the bucket, it is leaking.
Let the level fall with the pump off. If it stops at the light, the inlets or a tile band, the leak is at that level. If it keeps falling to the floor, look at the main drain, the floor and the floor and wall junction.
Tap the tiles and mark the hollow areas. Firm tiles with open joints can often be regrouted. Hollow or falling tiles mean water has got behind them.
If the shell is damp or water enters through cracks when the pool is drained, groundwater is pressing from outside. That water is stopped first.
Match your pool to one route. The right repair is the smallest one that reaches the real source of the leak.
Shell, lining, tile bed, grout: four layers, each doing its own job. Repair first, line second, test third, tile last.

Armstrong makes cementitious, polyurethane-cement and crystalline linings for pools, with the sealants, adhesives and grouts that go with them. Every one is a sound choice for its condition. Answer three questions for a starting recommendation, then confirm it with an Armstrong expert.

Before any product goes on, remove all loose, old and flaking material. This is a starting point, and an Armstrong expert confirms the final choice after seeing the site.

Waterproofing a new swimming pool starts in the concrete and ends with a water test before the first tile is fixed. A new pool that leaks usually does so at a pipe sleeve, the floor and wall junction, a construction joint or honeycombed concrete low on the walls. Each is dealt with before the lining.
The lining is the waterproofing. What goes over it depends on the finish the pool is to have. An Armstrong applicator also builds a new shell like the positive side of a retaining wall: repair pot holes and shutter joints with ROOFCRETE AR, one coat of ROOFCOAT FLEXI 100, then two coats of RAINSEAL BMW 250.
Pool tiles sit under water with chlorine and cleaning chemicals around them every day. Two things fail first: the adhesive bed, when water gets behind tiles fixed on dabs of mortar, and the grout, when ordinary cement grout washes out. The tile bed and the grout are chosen for constant immersion.
Tile selection for floors, walls and decks outside the water is covered on the tile fixing and grouting page.
Swimming pool leakage repair starts with finding where the water goes. Most leaks in a tiled pool are at a fitting or a joint, not through the middle of a wall. Those can be repaired locally, without stripping the pool.
Water running through a hole, crack or joint is stopped before any other work. A lining or grout applied over running water lifts at that spot.
Injection work is covered in full on the injection grouting page.
When water leaks, seeps or sweats through porous, honeycombed or cracked concrete, it has to be stopped inside the concrete first. This is the standard negative-side method for tanks, pools, basements, lift pits and retaining walls. A lining laid over concrete that is still seeping is pushed off by the water behind it: it blisters, lifts and fails. Grouting through drilled holes fills the internal voids and capillaries along the path of the water, so the surface is dry and sound before the coating or membrane goes on. Doses, thicknesses and coats are the standard figures; the site and the exposure decide where they move.
This is the extreme case, and it is the last resort. It is right when tiles sound hollow or are falling over large areas, when earlier local repairs have failed, or when the shell itself seeps through cracks and porous concrete. Local repair is tried first. When it cannot reach the problem, the pool is taken back to the shell and rebuilt in the right order.
The lining under the tiles is the main barrier in swimming pool waterproofing. Armstrong makes several that are listed for pools and water-retaining structures. Each is a sound choice. They differ in chemistry, in the pressure they are made for, so the reader can pick the one that fits the pool, and an Armstrong expert helps choose.
The method is the same for both: cut back to sound concrete, saturate it to a saturated-surface-dry state, apply the bond coat (ROOFBOND SBR 401) and place the mortar into the tacky coat, compact, finish, then moist-cure for at least 7 days.
The shell of a pool or planter box leaks first at its shutter joints, cracks and seeping patches. These are closed one at a time and then the whole surface is coated, so the pool is sealed as one continuous, flexible shell. Doses, thicknesses and coats are the standard figures; the site and the exposure decide where they move.
Pool decks, balancing tanks and plant rooms follow their own pages: water tank waterproofing, balcony and podium waterproofing and basement waterproofing.
Approximate quantities for a pool 10 m long, 5 m wide and 1.5 m deep on average. The floor is 50 sq.m and the four walls are 45 sq.m, so 95 sq.m in all, or about 1,023 sq.ft. Figures are worked out from each product's stated coverage on a smooth, prepared surface. An Armstrong expert confirms the final quantity after seeing the site.
Enter the pool size to see the lining, tile adhesive and grout needed for the floor and walls. Quantities only.
This is an estimate of material only, worked out from each product's stated coverage on a smooth, prepared surface. Rough or porous surfaces use more, so allow about 10% extra. Crack sealing, patch repair, plaster, coving and tiling materials are not included. An Armstrong expert confirms the final quantity after seeing the site.
No single chemical does the whole job. The shell concrete takes an integral compound such as CONPROOF LW 200. Pipe sleeves are grouted with non-shrink grout, joints are sealed with ROOFEX-SEAL PS, and the floor and walls are lined in two coats with ROOFCOAT FLEXI 100, ROOFBOND RFX PLUS 210 or ROOFCOAT PU 2K. Tiles are then fixed with a TILEX adhesive and grouted with TILEX EPOXY STAIN FREE 100.
The one that fits the pool. ROOFCOAT FLEXI 100 and ROOFBOND RFX PLUS 210 are flexible polymer-modified cementitious linings listed for swimming pools. Both are applied in two coats, both have 120%+ elongation and both cure to an abrasion-resistant surface. ROOFCOAT FLEXI 100 is a liquid mixed with cement on site, and ROOFBOND RFX PLUS 210 comes as a two-part unit. ROOFCOAT PU 2K is the premium polyurethane-cement option. Pools with groundwater outside can take a crystalline coating. An Armstrong expert confirms the choice after seeing the pool.
No. Tiles and grout are a finish. Water passes through cement grout and through any void in the tile bed. The waterproofing is the lining applied to the concrete shell before tiling, on the positive side.
TILEX EPOXY STAIN FREE 100 is a 100% epoxy grout that is chemical resistant, stain-free and listed for swimming pools. Where a cement grout is preferred, TILEX TG U 1600 or TILEX TG S 1500 is mixed with TILEX URP ADMIX 73 in place of water for submerged use.
A polymer modified TILEX adhesive, fixed as a full bed. TILEX 350 is listed for swimming pool tiling and TILEX 351 PLUS is a C2TE adhesive. TILEX URP ADMIX 73 is the latex additive listed for submerged tile installations. Ask Armstrong which combination suits your tile.
Usually because water got behind them. Tiles fixed on dabs leave voids, a missing lining lets the bed stay wet, movement joints get tiled over, or the pool is filled before the adhesive has cured. Hollow-sounding tiles are the early sign.
Compare the level drop with a bucket of pool water to rule out evaporation. Then switch the pump off and let the level fall. Where it stops tells you the height of the leak: skimmer, light, inlets or a joint. If it falls to the floor, check the main drain and the floor and wall junction.
Sometimes, and only partly. A leak at a fitting or joint above the floor needs the water lowered just below that level. A hole with water running through it can be plugged with RAPIDSTRONG PLUG 31 or WONDERSEAL PLUG XL, which set in the presence of water. Lining, crack repair and retiling on the floor need the pool drained.
Yes, when the tiles are firm and the leak is at a fitting, a pipe sleeve, an expansion joint or open grout joints. Those are repaired and regrouted locally. Tiles have to come off when they are hollow, or when the leak is through the shell behind them.
The tiles over the crack are removed, the crack is opened to a V-groove, injected if it leaks, and filled. The strip is lined in two coats with fibre mesh in the first coat, then retiled. A crack that keeps moving is a structural matter and needs an engineer.
With a polysulphide sealant. ROOFEX-SEAL PS is recommended for potable water-retaining structures. The old sealant is cut out, the faces are cleaned and primed with ROOFEXSEAL PRIMER PS / NPS, and the joint is resealed. It cures in 7 days at 20°C.
Each layer has its own wait. ROOFCOAT PU 2K needs 3 to 5 days of air cure before water contact. ROOFBOND RFX PLUS 210 is water cured for 7 days before flood testing. ROOFEX 2K 711 needs a minimum of 15 days before filling. Tile adhesive needs 14 days before permanent water. Follow the longest wait that applies and confirm it with Armstrong.
Yes. An integral compound makes the concrete denser, but joints, pipe sleeves and cracks still leak. The lining covers them. The two work together.
Yes. Any concrete structure that holds water is waterproofed on the positive side in the same order: repair, joints, cove, lining in two coats, water test, then the finish.
No. These Armstrong systems are made for concrete and masonry pools.
