Epoxy Injection of Structural Cracks
Restores dormant cracks in beams, slabs, columns and walls
Applications
Procedure
- Confirm the crack has stopped moving with a tell-tale check over a few weeks. A crack that is still moving, or one carrying water, is not injected with epoxy.
- Cut a groove along the crack with a cutting machine, blow out the dust and fill it flush with ROOFCRETE EP over ROOFBOND EP, so the injected grout cannot escape.
- Drill 12 to 14 mm holes into the crack at about 300 mm centres, about 75 mm deep, and blow the dust out with compressed air. Keep the holes dry.
- Fix non-return packers in the holes with RAPIDSTRONG PLUG 31.
- Mix RAPIDSTRONG GROUT EP 403 at 1 : 0.5 base to hardener by weight with a slow-speed stirrer for 2 to 5 minutes.
- Inject packer by packer from the lowest point without stopping, until each refuses. Allow about 0.5 kg of mixed grout per packer.
- Cut the packers off and seal the holes with plugging compound, about 0.2 kg per packer.
Important Suggestions
Pot life is about 65 minutes at 20°C and 40 minutes at 30°C; minimum hardening temperature 10°C. Where cracks come with rust stains or spalling, the steel is the real problem and needs structural repair.
Why This Treatment?
Epoxy injection glues a dormant crack back into one solid member. Used neat, the grout enters gaps from 0.1 mm and is non-shrink. Work-order specifications call for 70 N/mm² compressive, 30 N/mm² flexural and 15 N/mm² tensile strength at 7 days (BS 6319).
