Beam Jacketing with Shear Connectors
New steel and concrete tied to existing beams and slabs
Applications
Beams with lost sectionSlab soffits needing added steelHeritage and institutional buildings
Procedure
- Erect scaffolding and prop each beam before any concrete is removed.
- Chip with pneumatic chisels to the hard parent concrete and clean with a water jet.
- Remove rust scale with emery paper and wire brushes, treat tight rust with ALSTRONG RC and prime the bars with ALSTRONG ZP 777.
- Drill holes, brush and blow them out with compressed air, and fix L-shaped 8 mm shear connectors with RAPIDSTRONG AG.
- Fabricate the new bars to the drawing and tack-weld them to the shear connectors.
- Apply ROOFBOND EP just before concreting and cast the jacket in micro concrete. On slabs, lay polymer screed concrete with ROOFCRETE AR to about 50 mm.
- Inject remaining cracks with epoxy and cure for at least 7 days before removing the props.
Important Suggestions
The jacket size, connector spacing and propping all come from the structural engineer.
Why This Treatment?
Shear connectors tie the new steel and concrete to the old member so the two carry load together. Without them the jacket can separate.
